Interior design expert reveals the tiny detail that makes your house look and feel more expensive

An interior designer has revealed a simple and affordable way to make your home look and feel more expensive.

Nicholas Holmes, a home decorator and furniture buyer for Kmart Australia, told FEMAIL how to achieve a ‘luxe for less’ look.

Instead of buying new curtains or a rug to refresh your living space, you can obtain the same results by simply adding an ‘unexpected’ touch of colour.

‘Don’t be afraid to try a colour that isn’t currently in the space,’ Mr Holmes said.

‘Test it in something small, something like the Kmart lilac side table. An unexpected moment of colour makes a space feel really designed.’

Once you’ve experimented with a single splash of colour, it’s time to add more – but it’s always recommended to start with smaller spaces

Mr Holmes shared two other ways to enhance a space using furniture and décor.

One way is ‘layering’ the room with a duo or trio of similar items placed next to or on top of each other, which is ‘more impactful’ than spreading them out, he said

‘Investing in three cushions instead of three random items is an impactful way to update a space,’ he added.

His other method involves adding ‘high-shine finishes’ to bring light and shimmer to your home.

‘We’ve got a lot of ceramics coming through glassware and reflective surfaces, which adds that element of something special into a space and makes it feel really high,’ he said.

Kmart Australia is set to launch a range of new wine glasses, lamps and kitchen essentials later this month as part of the August Living range.

Customers can get their hands on the latest products online and in store from July 25.

The collection features rugs, mirrors, chairs and small décor items.

‘With this launch we’ve been bolder and braver in colour. We’ve also given every type of customer something new – there’s something for everyone,’ Mr Holmes said.

The budget retailer is also set to bring back a range of popular items, including the Gigi Floor Lamp, which went viral and sold out earlier this year.
