7 Colors That Always Look Good Together

Whether you’re decorating a living room, bedroom, or even a home office, choosing a color scheme can be one of the most challenging aspects of any interior design project. After all, it’s hard to know what goes well together. But don’t fret—whether you’re going for a dramatic space, something simple, or an aesthetic that’s somewhere in between the two, we have plenty of ideas for you. Here are seven color combinations that always look good together.

  • Becca Stern is an interior designer and the co-founder and creative director of Mustard Made
  • Sarah Latham is an interior designer and the founder of Latham Interiors

Ocean Blue and Sage Green

Is tranquility your goal? If so, ocean blue and sage green are an ideal color combo, according to interior designer Becca Stern. “With their soft grey undertones and gentle pops of color, ocean and sage are a match made in heaven,” she says. “Pair them together for a wash of color that’s subtle yet invigorating, perfect for a coastal cool look or to bring the outside in.”

This combination is also a fantastic way to create a whimsical aesthetic. Stern suggests going with pastel shades such as blush, butter, and lilac for a “fairy floss look.”

Olive Green and Navy Blue

Are you going for a sophisticated vibe? Consider going with olive and navy. “Like a chocolate mud cake or a wheel of brie, some things are just better when they’re rich and full of depth,” Stern explains. “Olive’s earthy tones are grounding, while navy’s vibrant marine hue references the sea. Together, it’s nature’s best—dialed up to 10.”

Burgundy Red and Camel Brown

Considering a fashion-meets-interior-design look? Opt for classic camel and deep burgundy, says interior designer Sarah Latham. “I have been loving the colors burgundy and camel together,” she says. “Not only is it making a presence in interiors, but oftentimes color trends are reflected in fashion.”

Whether it’s in fashion or at home, burgundy is having a moment right now. The deep hue feels elevated and luxurious, so don’t be afraid to experiment with it.

Purple and Gold

Want a space to feel equally bold and refined? Consider mixing purple and gold together. This combination is particularly ideal for textured textiles. For example, placing a gold-toned throw or pillows on a purple velvet or chenille sofa. A gold-toned wallpaper or accent fixtures also look fantastic in a bedroom with purple bedding—very royal.

Pink and Red

Looking for a powerful color combo? Pink and red are feminine, fun, and bold. While it’s an especially good choice for a child’s room, it can easily work in adult spaces as well. Painting the walls pink in a room with a red sofa brings in major drama.

Not doing a paint project right now? Place a pink rug under a rich velvet sofa for an extra opulent effect, or perhaps a pink and red striped wallpaper. The possibilities are truly endless.

Black and White

It’s a simple combination, but black and white always look good together. Whether it’s a white wall with black molding, a white sofa with black pillows, or a print like a black and white cabana stripe, this combo is the easiest to pair no matter what type of room you’re designing. If you aren’t quite sure what colors to choose and you’re looking for simplicity, black and white is the way to go.
