There’s something instantly attractive about metals in a home. Metallic design ideas are bold, intentional, and contrary to what one might think, can be dressed up and down depending on your vision for the space. From antique silver beds with ornate details to modernist brass kitchens, here’s a selection of homes from the AD archives where metallic design ideas—in all their lustrous glory—draw you in.
Opt For A Statement Copper Leaf Ceiling
Tech entrepreneur Sujay Jaswa and his wife, Dr Eleni Jaswa commissioned designer Alexis Banks Humiston of ABH Interiors says to bring their San Francisco home to life. A growing family with three young daughters meant that the Jaswa residence would have to be—at its very core—comfortable, liveable, and adaptable. The 9,500-square-foot San Franciscan home—a classic mid-century modern structure—reverberates with an Indian spirit. Yet, far from presenting as a kitschy Western reinterpretation of South Asian culture, it is refreshingly authentic.
Thoughtful interventions of Jaswa’s heritage culminate in the pièce de résistance—a dramatic 2,500-square-foot entertainment area that feels like a heady blend of a Mumbai speakeasy and a British members’ club. It features an extensive 20-foot banquette, wet bar, wine display, art display, silk-lined powder room, and media room. A rich indigo hue is swathed across the walls and ceiling in the form of a custom Phuljari silk wallpaper by de Gournay. Bone inlay cocktail tables dot the space, silk paisley fabrics are layered across seating areas, and a striking copper leaf is hand-applied onto the ceiling alcoves. “We added European design elements to reflect the clients’ love of travel,” says Humiston. “We also added a drum set and several pieces of art that reflect their love and practice of music.”

Break A Wooden Space With a Brass Bar

In a city which is home to the world’s largest number of Art Deco buildings after Miami, a commission came to Atelier Varun Goyal to design a two-bedroom 2,500 square feet apartment in Colaba, the southern-most end of Mumbai. No flashy, soulless skyscraper, the aesthetics of the building quietly proclaimed the dignity of the era it belonged to. “We wanted to create a continued experience from the building’s lobby and corridors. Even the staircase had Art Deco railings,” says Varun Goyal, principal architect of the eponymous atelier.
A concealed bar with brushed brass shutters adds a sense of understated glamour to the modernist interior, beautifully complementing the warm woods that fill the space with a timeless beauty. Throughout this apartment in Mumbai, there is a subtle geometry which underlies the aesthetic. Thin vertical lines, round handles and lighting carry through the spaces like a leitmotif. There is no grandeur or opulence, no attention-seeking flourishes…just an always-been-there sensibility.
